Film analysis – The Call(2020)

audio- truck moving against gravel/dirt getting softer as it gets further away
visual- the darkness of trees creates an unknown illusion of what is to come.
audio- soothing piano keys played
visual- light shining through into dark space, allowing a more inviting feeling than the creepiness before.
audio- thudding/rustling from rummaging around in the closet, confusion feeling from the overload of items and sound
visual- intrigued on what she is looking for in the closet.
audio- sighing through the phone of the recipient
visual- darkness surrounding the woman on the phone to draw in the unknown of the phone call.
audio- phone end ringing
visual- only light from the window, the woman is in the darkness though, symbolic of the unknown of the house
audio- eerie music, light footsteps, heavy breathing
visual- all dark except the footsteps, moving towards unknown.
audio- dark music, eerie
visual- lighter space, the centre is the door closed causing suspense

The film uses a lot of dark backgrounds to emphasize the unknown surrounding what is happening to the characters. I will create a semi-dark space as I hope to create a sense of confusion that will lead to their knowledge of the space later on as they enter more into the space.

The movie essentially is centered around the division of the phone calls between different periods of time. It is shown how it is translated through the opposing sides of the call. So the impact on one side is received on the other side.

The inner wall with glass outer
surface

The idea is to have metal balls falling in the space between the surface and the glass creating a melodic sound. Can be an interactive activity in the site as it is outside creating an atmospheric audiology for the inner and outer room.

Exegesis Intro/forming my project

Imagine walking a street and unable to hear anything but soft hums. However, these hums are louder and could be much sinister than what is picked up. Like a large tree could have fallen but it would be heard as a pencil dropping. These acoustics travels from various directions but where exactly?
The sound humming sounds usually associated to soothing and comfort is led to confusion and fear due to the inability to locate and decipher the sound.
The way people experience a space varies due to their capabilities, but this is how I experience it as a hearing-impaired individual without my aids. The fear of my aids abruptly cutting off, to have to go through those numerous emotions associated to it. It makes me wonder if others were in the same position would they react the same way? Or is it just my own paranoia responding?
Sound is a distortion of the existing nature. It creates the disposition of an object or space. I hope to explore how I could activate a sensorial user experience by preserving the existing spatial material and auditory within Fort Lane whilst replacing the existing ambiance to something more ominous.

Week 3: Script

Conceptual Key Terms: Senses, Community, Differences, Texture, Perspective

Senses
a faculty by which the body perceives an external stimulus; one of the faculties of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.

I hope to explore the senses- sound, sight and touch. However, I am hoping to emphasise on the sight and touch to create the visual and feel of sounds within the space. This is important to me as these are my key senses to navigate without hearing aids to support.

Community
1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
2. the condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common.

By using the above aim, this project would hopefully create a deeper bond and understanding for those hearing impaired within the community.

Differences
1. a point or way in which people or things are dissimilar.

In our community

Texture
the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or substance.

Perspective

  1. the art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other.
“the theory and practice of perspective”
  2. a particular attitude towards or way of regarding something; a point of view.

Temporal vocabulary:
Waiting– the action of staying where one is or delaying action until a particular time or event.
Stillness– the absence of movement or sound.
Capture– record accurately in words or pictures.

I had written this short script quickly 15 min prior to heading to the site.

common sounds heard within the site are the moving vehicles surround and within the site. Also, active machinery in the site.
