Exegesis Intro/forming my project

Imagine walking a street and unable to hear anything but soft hums. However, these hums are louder and could be much sinister than what is picked up. Like a large tree could have fallen but it would be heard as a pencil dropping. These acoustics travels from various directions but where exactly?
The sound humming sounds usually associated to soothing and comfort is led to confusion and fear due to the inability to locate and decipher the sound.
The way people experience a space varies due to their capabilities, but this is how I experience it as a hearing-impaired individual without my aids. The fear of my aids abruptly cutting off, to have to go through those numerous emotions associated to it. It makes me wonder if others were in the same position would they react the same way? Or is it just my own paranoia responding?
Sound is a distortion of the existing nature. It creates the disposition of an object or space. I hope to explore how I could activate a sensorial user experience by preserving the existing spatial material and auditory within Fort Lane whilst replacing the existing ambiance to something more ominous.

Week 3: Script

Conceptual Key Terms: Senses, Community, Differences, Texture, Perspective

Senses
a faculty by which the body perceives an external stimulus; one of the faculties of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.

I hope to explore the senses- sound, sight and touch. However, I am hoping to emphasise on the sight and touch to create the visual and feel of sounds within the space. This is important to me as these are my key senses to navigate without hearing aids to support.

Community
1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
2. the condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common.

By using the above aim, this project would hopefully create a deeper bond and understanding for those hearing impaired within the community.

Differences
1. a point or way in which people or things are dissimilar.

In our community

Texture
the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or substance.

Perspective

  1. the art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other.
    “the theory and practice of perspective”
  2. a particular attitude towards or way of regarding something; a point of view.

Temporal vocabulary:
Waiting– the action of staying where one is or delaying action until a particular time or event.
Stillness– the absence of movement or sound.
Capture– record accurately in words or pictures.

I had written this short script quickly 15 min prior to heading to the site.

common sounds heard within the site are the moving vehicles surround and within the site. Also, active machinery in the site.

Week 2: Scene Transitions

Scene transition is the period between two consecutive scenes. Transition effects helps in maintaining the continuity of your images or videos. When we move from one scene to the other, the transition effects would make sure that the scenes do not change abruptly and the transformation looks seamless.

Giuliano Bruno’s Public intimacy

Bruno, G. (2007). Public Intimacy: Architecture and the Visual Arts (Writing Architecture): Vol. Writing architecture series (pp. 17-21). Cambridge, Mass: The MIT Press.

Laura;
pg 19 ‘the filmic path is the modern version of architectural itinerary, with its own montage of cultural space’ the relationship between the film making and the architectural promenade
Pg 21 ‘…the art of memory is a form of inner writing’
‘They bear the layers of a writing that can be effaced a nd yet written over again…’
The links between the cinematic arts and the architectural aesthetics.

Emma;
pg 21 ‘we require therefore places, real or imaginary, and images or simulacra which we must, of course, invent for ourselves…’ we use places as wax.
When we go to a site visit later this week, I’ll focus capturing my voyage/experience through the lane over time; a sequence of sensory experiences rather than still images or moment

Belinda;
pg 19 ‘film inherits the possibility of such a spectatorial voyage from architecture.’
History and the connections to the architecture whether it’s near or far
The museums are displaying stuff that show history and culture – there was a lot of research and studies before editing down the information to the essence for public display.

Angel;
pg 21 ‘It bears the mark of the art of memory……..’
In every art piece there’s a story (experiences or interests) to unfold to why it was designed that way, this architectural paths holds the designer’s memory and will now hold new visitor’s memory

Reading the previous text has allowed me to think more about ‘memory’. Bruno states “memory interacts with the haptic experience of place” as it each has their individual memory of spaces depending on how they interact with the space. A normal person could use all five senses to experience a space. However, I am just lacking a tad bit in the auditory department, so is unable to experience it as a whole like others. This led me to think of a video created by Chella man who is also a deaf creator. In the video the words – “But through this loss, there is great gain … other senses heightened … Establishing a continuum of people who are different… yet connected.” were said and it really resonated with me as the amount of times I have sat in my room with my cochlear implant detached, existing in the world with with one less sense to a normal being. Seeing and feeling the world as it moves past me as silence embraces. Humming in the background as small whispers in my ear but oblivious to the surrounding noises as it all sounds the same.

Gong
For centuries, a gong was a symbol of success and status among Asian families – and still is to a degree.
There are many uses for gongs; to communicate; make announcements; make music; accompany life’s events; meditate and heal.
I am hoping to use the communication aspect into my design practice.

PART THREE: MANIFESTOS

Manifesto:

A document containing information targeted to convey to another viewer.

For this manifesto I plan to convey a message reflected from my intervention from Part two.

After the research above I have created my own manifestos relating to my own study.

From here I chose my favourite one and developed it furthermore.

Here I mainly changed the text as I was unsure if it would work..

Changing the layout and text more to make it work more.

Then I tested scanning ripped coloured paper and incorporating it in.
I quite liked the outcome so I continued to use it.

Tried pink coloured paper and it does not work as well.
Brown is good!

PART TWO: PROPOSING and INTERVENING

PROPOSAL ONE:

PROPOSAL TWO:

http://www.allanwexlerstudio.com/projects/coffee-seeks-its-own-level

I love this idea of interaction between the four people around the table. They would need to give each other a heads up before drinking as they all would have to drink to avoid spilling. This kind of intervention could be used within my space, as it is coffee after all. However, the mess would be disrespectful to the space and the staff there.

The way the index cards are to give instructions for construction of installations. It is unintentionally bringing a social element as it is conveying messages into actions made from another person. ACTUALLY after thinking about it more, it is intentional as that is the purpose of the cards, To translate words into something physical.

The idea that something that is not useful for yourself can be for others. Is seen in this intervention. I love that idea as it benefits everyone. As it is getting rid of from one side and receiving from another. I feel this could be turned into a domino effect as something could be donated because of the lack of use of item. Other people could donate the same thing as for the same reason. Then there would be a lot of the same items for those who need it or at least put it in better use.

I decided to continue with the study buddy idea as even though it is quite simple and straightforward. It would be one of the most effective way to make the already existing social space be more social than ever.

This is my book I made after carrying out my intervention of the “Study buddy”. It was fun!
